This can also make the motor difficult to work on since it is below the gate itself. Because the operator is mounted below grade it is vitally important that you provide enough drainage to keep the operators from filling with water. With smart placement of the control board the installation can be essentially invisible. The control board is housed in a separate cabinet and the motor and output is mounted in a metal or plastic box at the base of the column or post. You may even find them used to control swinging garage doors. Underground Operators are the Most Aesthetically Pleasing and Compact Gate Installations. This type of installation is usually found on very high end homes and custom gates or in alleys or other confined spaces. The upsides are speed of opening and durability, the downsides are the extra install expense, extra hardware costs, and potential pinch and entrapment hazards of this style of install. These units typically have a 5 to 10 year warranty. Slide gate operators are the most durable style of operator, but require a lot more hardware and concrete work in order to install and also have more safety concerns while moving. Most units are chain driven and have the control board housed on board the operator, but a few models use a rack mounted to the gate that rides on a pinion gear on the operator with a separate cabinet for the control board. Slide Gate Operators are used on Gates that Ride on a Track or are cantilevered out on pipe track wheels. These units typically have 2 to 5 year warranties. The upside is ease of install, lower cost, and a low profile appearance, the downside is lower durability and slower speed and in the trouble with installing on stone columns. This is NOT an issue if you are pushing the gate outwards. Because of the mounting geometry you would need to notch out a portion of the column in order to install the arms. This style is good for attaching to a steel post but are not suitable for use on gates with larger pillars or columns. The design is easy to install but is slower than the swing arm style and less durable. They use a separate control cabinet which controls to mechanical or hydraulic ram arms to either push the swing gate out or pull it in. Linear Arm Operators are the Most Commonly Sold Style of gate opener for residential or DIY installs. The upside is ease of install and low profile appearance, the downside is lower durability and slower speed. This units typically have a 2 to 4 year warranty. This units move slower than the swing arm style and are less durable, but are much nicer aesthetically. They uses a small motor and gearbox with an attached scissor arm and a separate box for the control cabinet. The upside is the durability, the downside is the higher price, harder install, and less aesthetic appearance.Ĭolumn Mount Operators Typically are a good choice for an aesthetically pleasing install on a gate that is mounted to pillars/columns, or installed in an alleyway.
